Double Platform Beds – Platform beds are stylish and modern alternatives to expensive furniture. These beds, which are basically boxes stacked on top of each other, can be designed with or without headers and can be easily modified as children grow. Storage adds versatility in apartments and small rooms. Build a double-sized platform for small children or teenagers to use as a bed and top with the standard mattress, foam mattress or futon.
Or use a “Bunkie” as double platform beds and add only the legs. Construct the bottom frame with 1-by-10-inch boards and platform with 1-by-4-inch boards. Since it places the plates on the sides, it has a height of 14 inches. Add two 1-inch thick pieces of plywood. Finish with a thick 4-inch mattress and your bed will reach a height of 20 inches. This is a comfortable distance for an adult but you want to use the shorter sides for a child’s bed or just build the 10-inch height base box.
Construct a base frame of a wood head and foot on its sides and lay to the sides using L-brackets or blocks of wood from the corner. Cut three or four support out of the same sized wood but cut 1 1/2 inches shorter than the head and stand because they go between the sides instead of through them. Secure the brackets with screws and L-brackets inside the double platform beds.
